That's a wrap - 2024 season comes to an end.
In a thrilling conclusion to the inaugural Disabled Irish Golfers Association (DIGA) Order of Merit season, Kevin Cassidy of Dungannon Golf Club claimed the Trevor Hillen Memorial Salver at the Dundrum House Hotel, Golf & Leisure Resort.
The season-long race showcased competitive spirit and determination, with the overall outcome being decided in the final event, making it a memorable conclusion to DIGA’s first Order of Merit competition.
Cassidy had a challenging start to the 2024 season, and he struggled to find his rhythm. However, as the summer progressed, he found his form, delivering a string of impressive top-five finishes in key events.
This steady climb up the leaderboard allowed him to overtake the long-time leader, Caolan Munnelly from Tullamore Golf Club, who had been the frontrunner for much of the season. Munnelly’s consistent performances throughout the year made him a tough competitor, but Cassidy's late surge proved decisive.
In the end, Cassidy took the coveted Trevor Hillen Memorial Salver, a trophy named in honour of the late Trevor Hillen. The award was kindly donated by Vivienne Hillen, Chairperson of DIGA and wife of Trevor.
The Salver is a fitting tribute to Trevor Hillen's legacy and contributions to the sport, embodying the spirit of perseverance and passion that characterised his life.
The competition for third place was no less intense, with Mark Clougherty of Lambeg Golf Club and Tom Doherty of Killarney Golf & Fishing Club tying for the position.
This inaugural Order of Merit competition was a landmark event for DIGA, showcasing the talents and dedication of golfers from all over Ireland. It provided a platform for golfers with disabilities to compete at a high level while fostering camaraderie and sportsmanship.
The Dundrum House Hotel, Golf & Leisure Resort served as a fitting venue for the final event, offering a beautiful yet challenging course that tested every aspect of the players' skills.
As the first season of OOM competition concludes, the success of the event sets the stage for future editions, promising even more competitive golf and opportunities for players.
The DIGA Order of Merit has already become a celebrated addition to the Irish golfing calendar, honouring the memory of Trevor Hillen and bringing together a community of players with a shared love for the game.
